About John

I’m a long-time Oak Park resident and a lifelong political enthusiast. For most of the time I’ve lived here, Danny Davis has been my representative, and I’m excited to take part in the important process of choosing who comes next.

My family spans the political spectrum — from a very progressive daughter to relatives who have voted for Trump three times. That reality has taught me to listen carefully and try to understand how people with very different life experiences think about the issues facing our city, our country, and the world. Beneath the noise and polarization, we agree on more than we often admit, and we all share a love for this country and its democracy.

Being semi-retired has given me the time and energy to dive deeply into this election. I’ve seen every candidate listed on this site speak at least once, and some multiple times. I’ve had extended, small-group conversations with five of them, ranging from very progressive to centrist. I’ve been genuinely impressed by all of them. These are serious, committed people who want to make the 7th District better.
On most major issues, the candidates — and many Democratic voters in this district — largely agree: opposition to recent federal policies, ending ICE and CBP raids, restoring SNAP benefits, and protecting core democratic institutions. Because there is so much agreement, primary elections tend to focus on the areas where Democrats differ rather than where they are united. It’s worth remembering that we are fundamentally on the same side.

As I’ve reflected on whom to support, I’ve found myself torn. Some candidates bring extraordinary academic credentials and professional experience. Others bring deep, lived experience from Chicago’s West and South Sides. The 7th District includes the West Loop and North Lawndale, Chinatown and West Englewood — neighborhoods of immense wealth and neighborhoods where access to basic food is a daily struggle. Representing this district well requires understanding and valuing all of it.

My hope is that this site helps you think not only about who best represents you, but who can represent the district as a whole — with empathy, competence, and respect for its remarkable diversity. Thanks for being here, and I hope this helps you make a thoughtful choice.

I’m a long-time Oak Park resident who has spent the past months closely following the IL-7 Democratic primary. This site is my attempt to turn hours of listening and research into something quick and useful for voters.
