Independent Expenditures

"The United Democracy Project (UDP) has reportedly committed to spending $2.8 million in television ads supporting Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin in the March 17 Democratic primary," according to the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest.  UDP is affiliated with the AIPAC which is a pro-Israel lobbying organization.

La Shawn Ford has been attacked by Fairshake which Super PAC supported by the Crypto industry; the advertising amounts to $1.5 million and misleadingly claims that Representative Ford is a felon.  See below for a brief summary of what really happened.

Conyears-Ervin Ethics Issues

Melissa Conyears-Ervin paid $30,000 to the City of Chicago to settle an ethics complaint in 2025.  According to the Chicago Tribune, "Conyears-Ervin used city time and resources to plan, schedule and coordinate appearances at four churches to "further (her) personal and political objectives, including but not limited to promoting the candidacy of two individuals for state office.'"  In addition, two of Conyears-Ervin's staffers alleged that "alleged Conyears-Ervin attempted to force BMO Harris — one of  banks where city money is deposited — to issue a mortgage tied to the building that houses the aldermanic office for the treasurer’s husband, Ald. Jason Ervin, 28th."

La Shawn Ford misdemeanor tax conviction

La Shawn Ford was charged with bank fraud in 2012 in connection with a credit line increase in connection with his real estate business.  (Representative Ford rehabilitates dilapidated properties on the West Side of Chicago.)  Ultimately, the US Attorney dropped all the felony charges and Ford pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor relating to misstating his  capital gain on sale of a home by $3,782.

John's take on these scandals

Here in Chicago, we expect to see corrupt politicians and have to be constantly vigilant about misuse public funds and sweetheart insider deals.  However, the above scrapes have not been career ending for these two community leaders.  Both have climbed up from poverty to serve their communities.  Each voter will have to make their own judgement but I for one am inclined to give them each a pass.
